Dominick's: The 5 O’clock Meeting Hour By: Tara Redfield March 19th, 2013
Dear Love,
There’s nothing like the feel of a classic restaurant bar. Especially when it’s one that’s been around since 1948. Dominick’s has preserved it’s reputation and it’s cool over the past 65 years. I wouldn’t argue with that amount of time. Known for it’s steadfast Italian specialities, the bar is now getting in on the action with speciality cocktails and a lovely happy hour to showcase them! Happy Hour, or in Dominick’s terms, “the five o’clock meeting hour,” is going strong and there’s no reason why you haven’t been!
I got my hands on a few of the delicious “meeting hour” snacks: The rice ball, meatballs, seasonal bruschetta and calamari. If you have never had a rice ball, I highly recommend it. It’s not diet friendly, but as far as fried balls of rice and cheese go, it’s pretty damn tasty!
Other menu specialties include: Oysters on the half shell, beef carpaccio, spiced marcona almonds with parmesan cheese, and baked ricotta. You are sure to find something that that gets your stomach excited!
Now, let’s talk cocktails. Beverage director, Nikki Sunseri, has created an impressively diverse selection including an array of favorites. Sticking to my whiskey/bourbon ways, I ordered the Gold Rush (bourbon, lemon, honey). Other options were the Moscow Mule, Dom Collins, Daily Margarita (yes it changes daily), Baked Apple Martini, and Penicillin. All classics, all wonderful. One could also choose the Benvolio Pinot Grigio or the Badia Chianti or a simple Moretti Draft. Hard liquor, wine, and beer...all covered!
I enjoyed sitting at the intimate bar. I felt as though I was in my own noir movie scene! Dominick’s definitely spills it’s old soul onto you. My Gold Rush went down with heat and sweetness and peeled the windy chill from outside off of my bones slowly but surely. The bursts of tomato from the bruschetta, the soft crunch of the calamari, the warm melt of the rice ball and the spiced richness of the meatballs put me at ease. I would definitely do another take or several if asked.
xx,
P.S. Dominick’s has also launched their “Piccolini” cocktail menu, featuring 3 oz. cocktails at $4 each, M-F 5-7pm. The petite-drink menu includes a Vodka Martini, Gin Martini, Manhattan, Champagne Cocktail, and Tequila Daisy. Perfect when you want to enjoy your cocktail but not be knocked out by it! A similar menu is also offered at Little Dom’s!
