"Barney's Beanery" Happy Hour

By Maren Swanson

Dear Love,

I HEART, Barney's Beanery, for the sheer fact that is in walking distance from my apartment. This place has been around forever, and once you walk in, even if it's your first time, you feel a bit of déjà vu. Every table is covered with celebrities cut out of magazines. If you're with someone and the conversation goes dead, simply lower your head and one of the pictures will surely spark up an interesting conversation. The interior has a lot of character, which seems to match the mélange of people inside.

All walks of life are here, and everybody seems to be having a great time. My waitress hands me a newspaper, literally, and it turnes out to be the menu. Warning: the portions sizes are huge. Even a half order of salad seems overly large. The beer selection on draft and bottles is extensive; however, don't expect to find an exceptional glass of wine. There are pool tables, video games, and televisions everywhere (always packed on game days). Happy hour is everyday from 4-7 p.m. Drafts are $2.75/$3. Well pitchers are $12/$14 and Buffalo Wings, Mozzarella Sticks, Chicken Fingers and Irish Nachos are all half off. If you like to live on the edge, request the Chicken Fingers dipped in their wing sauce. En fuego and awesome!

It's been said that Janice Joplin visited Barney's the night she overdosed. This place has history. It's not the classiest joint on the block, but a part of me feels like home when I'm here. Hey, there's no place like home.

XXOO,
Maren
