The Counter - Happy Hour

By Tara Redfield

Dear Love,

My friend Linda and I shared a past of club hopping nights together...like two years ago. Since then, our lives have gone in slightly different directions. We check in with each other every now and then, maybe share an inside joke on each other's facebook walls, but actually getting our schedules to align for a face to face is a challenge. Quite often our plans fall through. A couple of weeks ago, I thought, this is stupid! We're good friends, let's make something work. I proposed Happy Hour at Marie Callendar's Grill on Wilshire. Finally!

I arrived at Marie Callendar's Grill at 6:20. The last time I was in a Marie Callendar's was with my college boyfriend in Orange County for the brunch buffet about six years ago. Not one of my most memorable meals. I've heard talk around town that this Marie Callendar's served up a good happy hour. I walked around the bar to the front stretch to find two free bar stools. The atmostphere made me feel like I was in a midwestern city airport bar. There was something lonely about it. I didn't like it. Linda hadn't arrived yet so I decided to leave and check out other options.

It couldn't have been better luck that The Counter was next door. This burger spot, home of the "build your own burger" had a happy hour AND you could sit outside on the patio! Win, win. Now I was sitting in the sun feeling relieved. I texted Linda and took a look at the menu. $2.00 off all beer, half off all starters, and mini burgers at $2.00!

Linda's big grin found me from the sidewalk. We hugged and squealed the ceremonial way good girl friends do when they haven't seen each other for a long time. It was hard to know where to begin...drinks are always a good start. We both got Corona Lights from our waiter whose blue eyes and tattoos I was quite smitten with until he opened his mouth...ooops.

We couldn't decide if we wanted sweet potato fries, regular fries, onion strings or fried pickles. When you can't decide, you get them all! Linda had never been to The Counter before and was in awe of the "build your own burger" concept. Even though the regular sized burgers weren't on the happy hour menu, she went for one. I honored my happy hour options and got two mini burgers.

Linda's burger looked amazing. My mini burgers didn't really compare to the big ones. Now, if they let you build your own mini burgers for happy hour, that would be awesome. Despite having the mini burgers, with all those starters we ordered, I became plenty full and fast.

It was great catching up in the summer sun with fried things, burgers and beer! Maybe Marie Callendar's and I will meet again when the time's right. I'm thinking a cold November evening? We'll see...

xx,
Tara
