Holiday parties

The holidays are a time to get together and enjoy the company of loved ones, but because most of us spend the actual holiday with family, a multitude of superfluous festivities have popped up giving us an excuse to see friends and co-workers. Here are the top five holiday parties we all love to hate.

Cookie Party - Sweet treats are one of the best parts of the holiday season. If you’re not much of a baker, keep it simple with some classic sugar or chocolate chip cookies and leave the crafty cookies to the professionals. If you’re a little more daring try some macaroons or cinnamon rolls.

Ugly Sweater Party - Does it really have to be ugly? I may or may not be that girl that wears a sweater that isn’t exactly ugly... but it’s still fun to get in the spirit. Go thrifting, hit a yard sale or sift through your parents closet to find a gross pattern, cat sweater or better yet, something that jingles.

Secret Santa - The most personal and sometimes most painful of the holiday parties is also the most popular. When done with close friends gift giving can be easy but if you don’t know your recipient, it can be a struggle. If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, ask around and find someone who knows them well. They’ll be happy to help you and your gift will be a success.

White Elephant - Who brought the chia pet again this year?? Did you go for the big box only to find a jar of pennies? White elephant can be the most frustrating because obviously you brought the best gift and certainly walked away with the worst. Escape the frustration by having some fun and buying a silly gift that will lighten the spirits and get some laughs. When you’re running late and all else fails - twenty bucks in an envelope is almost always the most desired gift.

Gift Wrapping - A productive favorite amongst party planners and procrastinators alike, gift wrapping parties are a must for all. Hours of tedious measuring, cutting, taping and labeling are much more enjoyable with the company of others. Blast some holiday tunes and have a laugh while prepping those presents.

Although many of us dread these obligations, we come away with fun memories and jolly spirits. And of course the promise to come again next year.
