Learning about wine is fun, because the very best way to understand vintages, varietals and vino is to sip, sip, sip. Wine bars are perfect for this fruity education, because at home you are more likely to try one bottle at a time, whereas in wine bar you can comparison sip and relate each drink’s flavor, texture and bouquet to one another. wine

Wine bars are all over LA- but the best ones are unpretentious and allow you to explore their menu with a smile, and what better way to do that than at happy hour? Along with glasses of reds, roses and whites, most wine bars offer unique and upscale snacks to cleanse your palate, making a trip to a wine bar during happy hour a delightful dinner and an educational experience.

Corkbar is located on a corner downtown, with high-flying shelves of bottle décor that are just taunting the “Big One” to hit. Unlike many wine bars, Corkbar serves a full lunch and dinner, and on Monday through Friday from 4PM to 7PM all of their appetizers are half-off, with wine specials and draft beer discounts as well. And don’t miss their market-inspired specials on Tuesday, delicious $2 dishes that are served from 5:30PM until they are gone.

Back by popular demand is the happy hour at Barbrix in Silver Lake, a happy hipster hangout with simple themes of white walls, wood and wine. From 6PM to 7PM on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday they take half off all beer and wines. Whatever you do, don’t leave without trying the duck fat fennel-pollen popcorn, available for only $1 during happy hour. wineglass

If normal wine bars are a bit too hush-hush for you, head towards Abbot Kinney in Venice where Primitivo Wine Bistro serves an energetic crowd at happy hour, which takes place Monday through Thursday from 5:30PM to 6:30PM in the bar. Besides $4 glasses of wine, beer and sangria, you can order Moroccan lamb & tzatziki sliders or barbeque beef short rib sliders for $2.50 each, plus an assortment of other menu items.

Wine lovers must go to The Must, made famous for its dinners in the dark. Guests order by mood at this beautiful wine bar, and from 4PM to 7PM every day of the week that mood is happy! With over fifteen red, white, rose and sparkling wine specials to choose from plus unusual foreign beers, black sangria and $4 port floats, drinkers of every persuasion will find a libation that suits their taste. Hope the kid in you is hungry, for The Must’s happy hour food menu includes tater tots, soft pretzels and grilled cheese sandwiches.

And finally, try the newest thing in the world of wine: the automatic wine bar. At trailblazing Pourtal Wine Tasting Bar in Santa Monica, you can sample up to forty different bottles with their innovative “Enomatic” system that keeps wine fresh so you can do-it-yourself, ounce by ounce. On Monday from 4PM to close and Tuesday through Friday from 4PM to 7PM, 15% of sales from these tastings go to their selected charity, and you can try glasses for $5 along with $4 appetizers like spanakopita, duck rillettes and mini Kobe dogs.
