BLT Steakhouse - West Hollywood

By Tara Redfield

Dear Love,

It was a Thursday night and my roommate was performing stand-up at the Comedy Store. Being the clever lady that I am, I decided to make the evening a full-on event, starting with Happy Hour, of course.

The Comedy Store is about a three minute walk from my apartment...which meant that the happy hour destination needed to be walking distance too. Lucky me, the Sunset Strip is basically my back yard...haha! I should actually take more advantage of it than I do.

I heard a rumor that BLT Steakhouse had an unbelievably good tasting happy hour. I'm a sucker for a good rumor and wanted to investigate.

I invited Samantha (St. Felix, Chaya, Waterloo & City) and some other girls to join in on the evenings shenanigans, but when push came to shove Sam was my only gal ready for battle with me. We marched up the hill to Sunset and arrived at BLT adequately starved.

The bar was welcoming and romantic, it was safe to be at ease. We sat on a comfortable couch. I was afraid of never being able to get up once I was full.

Nothing like a "triple 5" happy hour. Five drinks, five plates, five dollars each. Let's see, sweet potato fries? Yes. Slider trio? Yes. Short rib grilled cheese? Yes. Gruyere mac & cheese with bacon and truffle? YES. Black mussels? Um, no, maybe next time. Socal Sangria? Yes. After our server left, I whispered to Samantha, "He is so hot." He was.

Our sangrias arrived first and were almost the size of fish bowls. Not kidding. "Socal" sangria is very sweet and infused with mango juice, if you were wondering. Personally, I don't recommend having more than one unless you are a highly skilled sangria swiller. You gotta watch out for the sweet ones!

All of the food came out at once. What to try first? I nibbled down a small handful of fries then forked myself a nice sized bite of mac & cheese. I am saying this right now, BEST mac & cheese in LA. I have had lots of mac & cheese, and BLT wins. The perfect amount of bacon and truffle oil might have had something to do with it, but, damn. Tasty.

Next to try were the sliders and short rib grilled cheese sandwiches. The sliders were too well done for my liking. I like my meat really pink and juicy, these were grayish. The grilled cheese sandwiches were incredibly rich, as you can imagine, especially after that mac & cheese, but they were very good. The cheese was perfectly melted.

Before calling it quits, with five minutes of happy hour left to go, Sam and I decided to share one more sangria. I should have taken my own advice. Let's just say it was one half too much for me.

Getting up from the couch was a challenge I had seen coming, we were so full! Just for fun, I left my card in the check presenter and who emailed me for a date three days later? That "so hot" server. The rumors are true, BLT Steakhouse has a great happy hour.

xx,

Tara
