Believe it or not, Downtown Los Angeles is becoming “the” place to be in our great city. It is where the hippest characters claim to hang at night. Now I’m not saying that I consider myself hip or cool or anything of that sort, but the downtown atmosphere has definitively fooled me to believe that one day I might be. At first glance DTLA may appear very pre-Cinderella meets her fairy godmother, but take a closer look and you will notice beauty all over, especially with the art and architecture. And won’t have to call quits at midnight.
The downtown art walk occurs every 2nd Thursday of every month. That night, galleries open their doors wide open with drinks, snacks and more importantly, great art walk happy hour deals that will last you the whole night. Plus the downtown art walk website lets you create your own map; check the galleries, restaurants and bars that they propose and have your whole evening planned out.
I had decided to start with the Broadway Bar, which seemed to be very popular and instead ended up at a little cozy bar/restaurant that wasn’t even on my map called The Parish. I instantly knew that I would love this place because of its uniqueness. Their quirky little drawings on their menus felt so out of place that I felt right home.
The bar had an extensive list of beers on tap and original cocktails. I ordered a cocktail from the happy hour menu that I liked so much that I forgot to photograph it (#happyhourproblems). The drink was called the Sunny Day Real Estate cocktail, that much I can remember. As an appetizer, I recommend you order one their amazing flatbreads. I tried the one with goat cheese and bacon and had an absolute food crush.
After walking around a bit, we took a right on Broadway and stumbled upon a new bunch of galleries. My friends and I took a quick look around and then headed out for another place to eat and drink. The Parish seemed to have woken the wolf in me and I was hungry for more.
I passed next to Broadway bar, which was packed, but another restaurant got my attention. This is now my new favorite burger place: UMAMIcatessen. Here they have a delicious selection of truffle burgers, which they sell as happy hour mini burgers and a great selection of beers. This is literally one of the most delicate, fancy, yet simple burgers I have ever eaten. I could not have comprehended how good a burger could be - until that UMAMI moment. Unfortunately I had to split my burger in half since I wanted to head to one last happy hour place.
Next I headed to Cole’s for a French dip sandwich. The wait was 30 minutes. But do not despair! Since it’s downtown art walk night, you can just slip out and cross the street to take a peek at what the artists are up to. Personally, I have a hard time understanding some of the displayed art. For example, this piece entitled Snake Eyed Pet or, this milk container opening up on a canvas...
Once you’ve seen enough art, head back to the real art: food art. Order a delicious French dip sandwich and some chili fries. I thought that we would be too late for a happy hour, but thankfully on downtown art walk night, there is a special art walk happy hour.
I ordered the champagne cocktail ($8) to celebrate what was a perfect night in Downtown Los Angeles. Hang around and you’ll start seeing some real crazy things like shirtless dudes with dreadlocks doing some dance tricks, or a dwarf riding a scooter up and down the street. The real lesson to get from downtown Los Angeles is that not only do the galleries provide the art, but the restaurants do too.
