One of my favorite places to escape for a weekend is California's beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. Whether we're wandering through Los Olivos, enjoying dinner in Buellton, or discovering a new winery along the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, it's a destination we return to again and again.
Most of the time, I love spending two or three days exploring the area. But sometimes life doesn't leave room for a full weekend getaway. That's exactly why we recently planned a one-day wine country escape—and honestly, it was the perfect reset. If you're looking for a relaxing day trip from Los Angeles (or anywhere in Southern California), here's the exact itinerary we followed, along with a few additional recommendations if you have extra time.
Our first stop was Gainey Vineyard, conveniently located just off Highway 101. After a couple of hours on the road, it's the perfect place to stretch your legs, use the restroom, and officially kick off wine country.
Over the years, Gainey has become one of our favorite first stops whenever we visit Santa Ynez wine country. The tasting room overlooks beautiful vineyards, creating a peaceful setting to sip wine while soaking in the scenery.
Wine tastings begin around $30, or you can order wine by the glass for about $15. Gainey is especially known for its Chardonnays and Rosés, making it a great first stop before heading into town.
About ten minutes later, we arrived in Los Olivos—one of my favorite little wine towns in California. One of the best things about Los Olivos is that nearly everything is within walking distance. You can easily spend an entire afternoon strolling between tasting rooms, boutiques, markets, and restaurants without ever moving your car.
Before more wine tasting, we stopped at Gandolfo Family Market & Deli to grab lunch. We'd heard great things about their famous tri-tip sandwich, but unfortunately it had already sold out by the time we arrived—so that's definitely on my list for our next visit! Instead, we enjoyed one of their freshly made sandwiches, and the quality of the ingredients did not disappoint.
Beyond sandwiches, the market is stocked with gourmet snacks, local cheeses, drinks, and wines by the bottle, making it a great stop if you're planning a picnic or want to stock up for your hotel room later. It's a charming little market that's well worth a visit, whether you're grabbing lunch or picking up a few goodies to enjoy throughout the day.
As we walked through town, one sign immediately caught my attention: $1 Wine Tastings
Naturally, I assumed there had to be a catch. There wasn't.
Tensley Wines in Los Olivos offers four wine tastings for just $1. I actually asked the employee how it worked because I thought maybe it was one dollar per pour. Nope—it was one dollar total.
The tasting included one white and three reds. My favorites were the GSM and the Syrah, both incredibly well-made wines that easily exceeded my expectations. Honestly, this may be the best wine tasting value I've ever come across.If you're visiting Los Olivos, don't skip this hidden gem.
Just a few steps away sits another favorite: Liquid Farm. I'm already a fan of their Rosés, but I also love the atmosphere inside the tasting room. One wall is lined with beautiful rosé-colored bottles, making it both elegant and inviting.
One feature I especially appreciated was their option to order a half glass of wine. After several winery stops, sometimes you don't want another full tasting or even a full glass. Being able to enjoy half a glass of Rosé for around $5 was the perfect solution. The staff was incredibly welcoming, and it's an easy addition to any Los Olivos wine walk.
No trip to Buellton feels complete without dinner at The Hitching Post II in Buelton. We've eaten here many times over the years, and it remains one of our favorite restaurants in the Santa Ynez Valley. This visit, I ordered the 7-ounce top sirloin while my husband chose the 12-ounce filet mignon. Both were cooked perfectly.
The restaurant was also celebrating its 40th anniversary, so they were featuring special wine offerings by the glass. I usually order their Cork Dancer Pinot Noir, but this time I tried the limited anniversary Cuarenta Pinot Noir and thoroughly enjoyed it.
And if you're sitting at the bar... Order the espresso martini. It's fantastic and served in a beautiful vintage-style coupe glass. Movie lovers will also recognize The Hitching Post II from Sideways, which filmed several memorable scenes here.
If you're staying overnight or simply heading home the next morning, make one final stop at Ellen's Danish Pancake House.
This classic diner has been serving breakfast favorites for decades and still delivers that nostalgic roadside experience. Expect fluffy pancakes, thick slices of French toast, endless cups of fresh coffee, and friendly service.
I also loved the little details. Every table comes pre-set with an assortment of jams and preserves, including strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, and marmalade, along with all the classic breakfast condiments. Don't forget to ask about the daily specials.

Santa Ynez Valley is one of those places that never gets old. Every visit feels just a little different, and there's always another winery, tasting room, or hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
