Best Mexican Happy Hours In Queens

Weather's getting warmer in New York City, and that means the bars and restaurants will unveil their outdoor seating as well as open their retractable window doors to refresh the public. Even more importantly, the dawn of spring welcomes the adopted Mexican holiday called Cinco de Mayo. Most New Yorkers will invade pseudo-Mexican haunts like commercialized Dos Caminos in Manhattan to take down margaritas and Coronas.

Still the more knowledgable city resident knows that the best place to celebrate the international Mexican drinking day is in Queens. There's more authentic Mexican cuisine and drinks in the borough of Queens than other place in the city. Of course, that has to do with Queens' extraordinary large population of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. In fact, there's at least a Mexican bar, taqueria or restaurant in each neighborhood of Queens.

Needless to say, drinking options abound in Queens -- cheap, happy hour drinking options that is. Your Mexican bar hop starts west in Astoria. There's numerous happy hour choices in Astoria. Take your first stop at MexiQ, located on 30th Avenue and 38th Street. The Tex-Mex themed restaurant and bar features a large craft beer selection. Every weekday from 5 to 7 pm you could grab a craft beer at half the price on the restaurant's entire beer selection. For the Mexican choices you could savor a traditional margarita for $5 or make it a flavored margarita for $7 to go with chicken flautas for $5 or a tostada for $4.

A more traditional Mexican experience could be had a few blocks away at Las Margaritas, which sits two blocks south on 38th Street and Broadway (also a short walk from the R/M subway station). The restaurant boasts a more colorful motif and cozy sidewalk cafe. And go from 4 to 7 during the week to grab the $4.50 margarita or $3.50 beer. On the weekends that happy hour is from 6 pm to midnight for only margaritas but with a strictly Mexican theme and outstanding food, it's worth a stop. Plus, they make a mean margarita.

In the neighboring Woodside community, there's the classy La Adelita. The grub hub offers $4 wines and $3 beers from 4 to 8 pm. But it's the Mexican hospitality that thrives at this family-owned restaurant. A short taxi ride across Queens Boulevard, there's the stylish, exotic and fun Arriba, ArribaRestaurant in Sunnyside. On Mondays and Tuesdays, they hold Margarita Madness, which is when the bar offers $5 frozen margaritas and $5 sangria all day long.

But save some time to suck down some $3 margaritas and sangria during the happy hour at El Patron Grill, which is locates just north of Roosevelt Avenue on Northern Boulevard in Flushing. From 4 to 7 pm, you could also fill up on quarter wings and dollar taquitos.
