How You Gonna Ship it? - Best Ways to Ship Wine.

So, you headed to Napa and now your weekend is over and you have a nice little collection of wine. And now you’re thinking “how am I going to fit all these bottles into my luggage (non-carry on)? The honest answer is you’re not. Well, you can, but at most maybe 2 to 3 bottles, but you’re looking at your hotel bed with 12 to 15 bottles on it. What to do, what to do? I’m going to give you 3 options, and these 3 options are it, there really is no other way.

The first option is shipping your new found favorites. Before you make your way to the airport, make sure to leave some time to stop at a Fed-Ex, UPS, or shipment store. You can find them anywhere, just pull out the ol’ smart phone and do a simple search for shipping stores or if you don’t have a smart phone (?) just ask your hotel front desk if they know of any shipping stores in the area. Most shipping stores will have your necessary wine shipping needs aka styrofoam holders, boxes…whatever. The price isn’t actually that bad, it can range from $30 to $100 depending on how much you’re shipping. Also, the great thing about shipping through these companies is that you’re fully insured, so if anything happens to your wine, you’re covered.

The next option to get your wine home safely is to just use the winery you are buying from. If you visited a winery and loved almost everything they poured for you and ended up buying more bottles than you thought you would, every winery will ship to you. And what’s great also, if the weather is a bit sticky outside, most wineries will hold your wine until the temperature drops. If your home address is California, you’ll most likely get your wine overnight without the extra overnight cost, so that’s a plus.

The third and final option is to bring an empty extra suitcase along for the trip. If you plan on doing this, I must warn you on how to do it. Either pack some sort of bubble wrap/air-bag or do as I do and take your dirty laundry (usually T-shirts) and wrap your bottles with your clothes. The one thing you have to be careful about is your suitcase weight at check-in. If you don’t know the magic number, it’s 50 pounds, so don’t go over!

With all that being said, I think your best is to find yourself a nice shipping store and mail your goods fully insured and worry free. Throwing newly bought wine in with your regular luggage may end up being a nightmare; zip-zip and oh no there’s wine everywhere! Oh no, your clothes are ruined and you have to throw out…anyway. The wine is bought and the shipping options are prepped, best of luck and enjoy your juice in the future.
