The first time I ever ate at a Pink Taco was at the Vegas location in the Hard Rock Hotel and it definitely had a “party” atmosphere. So, when they finally opened up the West Hollywood Pink Taco on Sunset, my friends and I couldn't wait to go! I wanted to make their opening party on Cinco de Mayo (and my birthday), but the place was so overpacked that we didn't dare try and enter. After the craziness died down, we hit up the bar several weeks later but we were actually too early for the happy hour - darn you, day drinking! Anyway, I finally made it back to the Pink Taco to check out their happy hour and last weekend I made it back again. Spring had just begun and the weather was gorgeous outside so my friends and I wanted a weekend happy hour spot with a great patio. P.S. I didn't make it in the group shot :(
We walked up to Sunset and snagged a table for six people around 4 p.m. on a Sunday. The happy hour menu hadn’t changed much since my last visit; appetizers were around the $7 mark and drink prices were about the same too. However, for the drinks we noticed that they had a $7 frozen margarita but we didn’t see a margarita “rocks” option. After inquiring with our server, whom was super friendly, she mentioned that we could, in fact, order a house margarita on the rocks for only $5. Good thing we asked because she even commented, “It’s actually a better deal.” How about posting both options on the happy hour menu - just a suggestion.
The table ordered some $3 Dos XX beers and some $5 house margaritas with some additional dishes while we waited for another friend to arrive. The atmosphere that afternoon at the Pink Taco was lively and fun. Everyone was starting to sport their Spring attire and almost every table had a margarita on it. When our sixth person arrived, she ordered the non-happy hour jalapeño margarita “skinny” style. She was not a big fan and the rest of us tasted it and agreed. The margarita was drowning in lime juice and was barely drinkable. I tried to get it fixed at the bar for her but then the drink came out too sweet with agave. Eventually, the drink got re-made for the third time and it tasted like straight booze – I think they just wanted to shut her up! It was one of those rare scenarios when the happy hour drinks were better tasting than the regular-priced drinks. You can also order white or red Sangria for $5 a glass, F.Y.I.
For the food options, we tried the $7 mini nachos with chicken (chicken added is $2 extra) and the tacos. All of the flavors were good and the presentation was nice, but I noticed that the portion sizes this time seemed smaller than the last time and still the same price. The “mini” nachos are smothered in cheese and topped with black beans, cilantro, jalapeños and what looks like some more cotija cheese on top. I really enjoyed the chicken Pink Tacos served on corn tortillas with seasoned tender chicken, black beans, pickled “pink” onions, avocado and cheese. The guacamole was good, but for $7.50 I expected more bang for my bucks. I should mention that the Pink Taco served us complimentary chips and salsa immediately after we sat down and our server came by near the end to see if we wanted to add anything else before the happy hour ended - bonus points!!!
All in all, our happy hour experience at the Pink Taco on Sunset was great. The service was friendly and attentive and I actually love the casual “Cabo” feel of the joint more than I enjoy the Cabo Cantina’s happy hour down the street. Our happy hour reunion with friends was so stellar that we had to end the evening with the $4 happy hour Cazadores silver tequila shots. We all dug the fact that we can meet up at their happy hour seven days a week and enjoy the beautiful weather on the open patio. Salud!
