Pumpkick Beer

Welcome to our new column: Drink du jour! Here we taste all types of spiritis to educate you and ourselves about the myriad of libations on the market. Try them too and tell us what you think! Everyone's palette is different, which is why we'd also love to hear your opinion.

Lovehappyhour.com approved taste-testers will be showcasing what we love (and don't love) about select drinks that we sample throughout the year. Since it's the beginning of fall, we thought it was appropriate to begin with a new seasonal brew: Pumpkick Beer.

I usually rummage through Trajer Joe's bucket of "single beers" (you know, the ones separated from the rest of the pack) and this weekend I discovered a new ale, Pumpkick Beer. I have a major pumpkin-flavored fetish, so this beer looked right up my alley. However I was cautious, because I have tried many pumpkin beers that are too heavy-handed with the pumpkin flavor.

I was pleasantly surprised at first sip with the fall flavors that Pumpkick Beer packed; pumpkin essence, spices (clove, nutmeg perhaps?) and a touch of cranberry juice. Mind you, I served it in an ice cold stein, but it was really delicious. For example, I like Samuel Adams Octoberfest, but it's a little more intense and I drink it further into the colder days of November, whereas Pumpkick is a great "starter" fall beer. Pumpkick beer is made by New Belgium Brewing and the ABV is 6%. Cheers.

Pros: Balanced fall and pumpkin flavors, not too overpowering.

Cons: Not sold at most grocery stores.
